Parker Solar Probe perihelion, 12 December 2022

This figure shows the orbital configuration of STEREO Ahead (red) during the perihelion passage of Parker Solar Probe (orange) centered on 12 December 2022. The positions of Parker Solar Probe are plotted at one day intervals during the period when it is within 0.25 AU of the Sun. The sense of motion is counter-clockwise. During this short period, the motions of STEREO and the planets are negligible in the Heliocentric Earth Ecliptic coordinate system which follows Earth's orbital period. STEREO Ahead is in quadrature at the point of closest approach. Radial alignment and magnetic connectivity also occur during perihelion passage.

Note that the projected location of STEREO Behind is also plotted. However, that spacecraft is not currently operational. Follow this link for more information.

Also shown are the projected positions of Solar Orbiter (purple).

The following figure shows the progression of Parker Solar Probe through the fields of view of the STEREO/SECCHI telescopes. The images are simulated, based on data from earlier in the STEREO mission.
